Roper would (hopefully) bring some of the qualities that has made Cutcliffe so successful in Durham. 9) Bronco Mendenhall, Head Coach, BYU <http://www.ksl.com/emedia/slc/2492/249247/24924724.jpg> The BYU head coach has kept the Cougars relevant for his nine seasons at the helm – no small feat considering the limited resources and restrictions in Provo. He’s been mentioned for some major-conference jobs before, but he was never a leading candidate. Many believe he would leave if the right school came in with an offer BYU couldn’t match. Florida is the kind of school that can do that, but Mendenhall probably isn’t at the top of their list. 8 ) Brent Venables, Defensive Coordinator, Clemson <http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2013/1231/ncf_u_venables_kh_1296x729.jpg> Venables was the defensive coordinator for 12 years at Oklahoma, and has now held the same position with the Tigers since 2011, turning them from one of the nation’s worst units to one of the best. He’s a long-time assistant who’s had his name mentioned in various head coaching searches but never left, but if Florida were to come calling, Venables would jump at the chance. 7) Mack Brown, ESPN Analyst/Former Texas Head Coach <http://www.dallasnews.com/incoming/20131210-newmb.jpg.ece/BINARY/newmb.jpg> This is a definite wild card, but expect Brown’s name to be thrown around a lot if/when Muschamp gets fired. We’ve seen how hard it is for long-time coaches to stay away once they leave (i.e. Steve Spurrier, Bill Snyder, Urban Meyer), and there’s no better job for him to come back to. 6) Art Briles, Head Coach, Baylor <http://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/ncf_g_briles_gb1_640x36011.jpg?w=1003> Briles has had his name linked to every major head coaching vacancy since leading Baylor to national prominence, and this is no different. He’s turned down every job he’s been offered up to this point, but a traditional power in the SEC could be an opportunity that’s too hard to pass up. 5) Charlie Strong, Head Coach, Texas <http://blogs-images.forbes.com/leighsteinberg/files/2014/07/010913-5-cfb-texas-charlie-strong-ob-pi.jpg> Strong is in his first year as the head man in Texas, but the fanbase hasn’t been thrilled with him so far. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Gators, and he’s someone Florida fans love. 4) Kirby Smart, Defensive Coordinator, Alabama <http://www.cbssports.com/images/collegefootball/uspw_4023143.jpg> Alabama’s defensive coordinator is one of the best coordinators in the country, and like Clemson’s Chad Morris, he’s another guy that big-name schools have gone after as a potential head coach. However, Smart has been content to stay at Alabama (perhaps waiting to take over for Nick Saban when he retires)…but there aren’t many jobs out there with the prestige and resources that Florida brings to the table. Smart is a proven winner who will immediately have the players’ respect. 3) Chad Morris, Offensive Coordinator, Clemson <http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/002/634/702/clem_crop_exact.jpg?w=1500&h=1500&q=85> Morris is currently serving as Clemson’s offensive coordinator, and has been rumored as a candidate for a lot of top jobs around the country over the past few years. Clemson’s offense has been one of the best in the nation under Morris, and he could turn Florida back into the up-tempo spread team that Urban Meyer took all the way to the top. 2) Jim Harbaugh, Head Coach, San Francisco 49ers <http://ninerfans.com/wp-content/gallery/32-nfl-coaches-2014/Jim-Harbaugh.jpg> Harbaugh would jump to the top of this list if San Francisco lets him go, which is an issue that’s still up in the air at this point. Florida can offer so much more for the proven coach, and he’d be a home run hire for players and fans alike. 1) Dan Mullen, Head Coach, Mississippi State <http://insidemsusports.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/10/files/2013/10/dan-mullen-kentucky-13-1024x813.jpg> Mullen has turned the Mississippi State football program around, and will be the most sought-after head coaching candidate this offseason. He has ties to UF - where he was the offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer - so it seems likely that if he were to leave Starkville, it would be to coach the Gators.
