The Gainesville Sun learned of Donovan’s extension through an open records request. Under terms of the deal, Donovan’s base salary was $4.2 million in 2014-15. It will drop to $3.9 million next season and hold steady at $4 million per season from 2016-17 to 2017-20. Donovan and Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley agreed to terms of the deal last summer, after the 19-year coach led the Gators to their fifth Final Four in school history. Donovan signed the deal in December. The Gators are coming off a 16-17 season, their first losing record since going 14-15 in 1997-98. The bonus structure of Donovan’s contract will remain the same -- $50,000 for winning an SEC regular season title, $25,000 for winning the SEC Tournament and $37,500 for reaching the NCAA Tournament, which can increase to $75,000 for reaching the Sweet 16, $100,000 for reaching the Final Four and $150,000 for winning a national title. Donovan’s base salary from UF will remain $220,000, with the majority of his yearly salary coming from television, speaking and apparel deals. Donovan, who will turn 50 on May 30, notched his 500th career win in February, joining Bobby Knight as the second coach in college basketball history to win 500 games before his 50th birthday. Donovan has led the Gators to four Final Fours, seven Elite Eights and 14 NCAA Tournament appearances in 19 seasons. His career record is 502-206 overall and 467-186 at UF. At an average salary of $4.067 million, Donovan remains the fifth highest coach in college basketball, behind Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski ($9.6 million), Kentucky’s John Calipari ($7.5 million), Louisville’s Rick Pitino ($5.8 million) and Kansas’ Bill Self ($4.96 million). The average salary of Donovan’s prior deal was $3.7 million. The buyout on Donovan’s contract remains at $500,000, though the veteran coach has a window from March 1 to April 1 to end the agreement without paying it.
