Well, this ought to give the junk sports blog writers something juicy to talk

One option Florida coach Jim McElwain is considering with his quarterbacks this
week is flipping the script from the opener and starting redshirt freshmen Will
Grier and then bringing in sophomore Treon Harris after a few series.

“It’s something we talked about, maybe looking at it,” McElwain said Monday.

In the 61-13 victory over New Mexico State, Harris started and played the first
three series, then gave way to Grier late in the first quarter. Grier played
the rest of the first half and started the third quarter. Harris returned late
in the third quarter.

It’s a script that could be reversed Saturday night against East Carolina.
McElwain said the one certainty at this stage is that both quarterbacks are
going to play.

“We’ll kind of look at that and I’ll let you know, like I did (last week), but
we’ll play both like we did last week,” McElwain said. “As far as how we’ll do
it, I’m sure it will be similar.

“We kind of hit it (with the pitch count). I’m not sure the exact pitch count,
but it worked out a little bit. We tried to sit in kind of that three series,
12 to 15 reps, go from there, and it’s just kind of in the flow of the game how
it works. But I thought for the most part both guys did a heck of a job.”

Both quarterbacks were proficient running the offense in the opener. Harris
completed 14 of 19 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while Greer was
15-of-17 for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Grier also ran for a touchdown.

“I think both guys played well, both guys had mistakes,” McElwain said. “But
that’s part of playing, that’s part of learning. And yet here’s the good thing,
they’re all correctable mistakes, they’re not fatal flaws, as we like to call
them in our industry. Both guys do a good job, both guys moved the team.”

McElwain praised Harris for his ability to elude the rush and make plays down
the field. He said he was impressed with the way Grier effectively executed the
two-minute offense at the end of the first half that culminated with a 32-yard
TD pass to tight end C’yontai Lewis.

“I thought both quarterbacks had moments that were really good,” McElwain said.
“I thought Treon showed some escape-ability and created big plays down the
field, extended plays. I think that’s a real positive.

“What Will did with that two-minute drive right before half was really big. We
gave up a score and we answered. What that shows me is a little bit of resolve.
We overcame some negative plays.”

McElwain said he was also impressed with how both quarterbacks spread the ball
around to multiple playmakers. Fourteen different receivers caught passes.

“I liked the fact that there were a lot of people in the box scores as far as
touching the ball,” he said. “I think that’s a credit to both quarterbacks
taking what the defense gives them, not just looking for one guy to throw it
to. I think it showed a maturation in both of those guys’ cases going through
their read progressions getting it where it needs to go.”

The productive play of the quarterbacks was one of many positives in the
seemingly near-flawless opener.

The offense rolled up 606 total yards, the defense gave up no first downs and
held the Aggies to minus-1 yard in the second half and the Gators had only one
penalty, coming in the game’s final minutes.

As good as the overall performance was, McElwain said there is plenty of room
for improvement.

On the negative side, Grier lost a fumble, the defense gave up some explosive
plays in the first half and the special teams did not produce anything in the
return game and had an extra point blocked.

“I thought there were some good things on both sides of the ball, but obviously
some things we need to correct,” McElwain said. “There are some really good
things to build on.

“There’s going to be teachable moments around any game. There are going to be
mistakes happening. We’ve got to detail everything we do to get better. We’re
not there, but I think we had a pretty good start.”
