Many modern defenses employ a 4-2-5, particularly against passing teams, where the strong safety acts as the third linebacker. We still need linebackers, 6-2 240 thumpers that have speed and can man the middle would be nice, but they are interchangeable, sometimes appearing as defensive ends (McAllister) in a 5-2-4 and sometime appearing as a safety (Maye/Neal) in a 4-2-5 (nickel Package). Of course I am using a base 4-3-4 defense for this example, I have witness lining up in a 3-4-4, where one of the linebackers was Neal and one was Maye (Dime package). Today's defenses employ a multitude of alignments based on down, distance, and opponents tendencies. You also see a lot more defensive specialists particularly along the defensive front seven, with run stoppers and pass rushers. I believe this guy makes our third LB commitment, plus we are still in the running for the Wilson (?) kid out of Alabama, so that would make 4 for this class. Another 3-4 next year and we should be fine. That being said LB's are like watches and pocketknives, you can't ever have enough.
