Florida quarterback Treon Harris is using the offseason to work on his
route-running skills.

A source told ESPN.com on Friday that the embattled quarterback is currently
spending time at wide receiver during workouts, but the move hasn't been
finalized. The sophomore went 4-4 as the Gators' starting quarterback after
taking over for Will Grier in mid-October. Grier went 5-0 as the starter, with
a dominant 38-10 win over Ole Miss in which he threw four first-half
touchdowns, but he was suspended for a year by the NCAA after testing positive
for a banned substance.

Grier decided to transfer from Florida in December.

While Harris, who is 8-6 all-time as Florida's starter, helped lead the Gators
to their first trip to the SEC championship game since 2009, he struggled
mightily with his consistency when throwing the ball late in the season. Harris
went 3-3 during the last six games of the season, completing just 47.8 percent
of his passes with four touchdowns to six interceptions. Harris finished the
year ranked 11th in the SEC with a QBR of 54.0.

The Gators should have better quarterback depth in 2016, starting with Oregon
State transfer Luke Del Rio being eligible to play after sitting out the 2015
season due to NCAA transfer rules. Florida also signed the nation's No. 5
pocket-passer prospect in ESPN 300 member Feleipe Franks and little-known
three-star Kyle Trask. Both enrolled on campus early.

Jim McElwain and his staff added even more depth with former Purdue quarterback
Austin Appleby, who transferred to Florida as a graduate student. Appleby
played in five games last season, completing 57.5 percent of his passes for
1,260 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. He's thrown 19
touchdowns and 19 interceptions in three seasons.
