Let us not forget that the teams in Omaha traveled a brutal road and all
deserve to be there.

The league of Herschel and Bo became a quarterback/passing league after Steve
Spurrier arrived at Florida in 1990. Now, the SEC is a tailback/rushing league
again thanks to Alabama, LSU, Georgia and others -- the way they've cranked out
elite back after elite back in recent years.

There will be another strong running back stable in the league again this
season, led by at least two Heisman Trophy candidates.

One of those, of course, is in the Eastern Division.

A week after ranking the league quarterbacks, here are our tailback rankings
for the East:

1. Nick Chubb, Georgia -- This top ranking, of course, depends on Chubb making
a full recovery from ACL surgery. If he does, and returns to the form he
flashed so brilliantly last season, he'll make a strong run for the Heisman.
His combination of size, strength and speed is tough to top -- and stop if
you're a defender trying to tackle him.

2. Jalen Hurd, Tennessee -- Speaking of tough to stop, this 6-foot-4, 240-pound
stud is a runaway freight train with the ball in his hands. Even though he
shared carries with Alabama transfer Alvin Kamara, Hurd rushed for 1,288 yards
and 12 touchdowns in a major breakout season in 2015. Justifiably, he's being
mentioned with the Heisman heading into the season.

3. Sony Michel, Georgia -- Yes, the guy who filled in for Chubb last season
established himself as one of the top running backs in the SEC, rushing for
1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. No, he's not a product of the system; he's a
dynamic back.

4. Ralph Webb, Vanderbilt -- Florida's decision not to offer this Gainesville
High kid a scholarship a few years ago looks worse and worse. He's clearly
capable of not just playing in the SEC, but playing at a high level in this
league after rushing for 1,152 yards and five touchdowns last season.

5. Stanley “Boom” Williams, Kentucky -- A back with that nickname has to be
good, and he is. Williams averaged a whopping 7.1 yards a carry in rushing for
855 yards and six touchdowns last season.

6. Ish Witter, Missouri -- He did a nice job filling in for the injured Russell
Hansbrough last season, rushing for 518 yards and a touchdown. In his battle to
become the featured back this season, Witter will have to fend off
hard-charging Trevon Walters.

7. Jordan Cronkrite, Florida -- Or Jordan Scarlett or Mark Thompson, depending
on which of the three tailbacks eventually becomes the starter. The three are
so even, though, that regardless who starts, they'll likely be sharing the rock
this fall. There is a lot of upside to this group.

8. David Williams, South Carolina -- After rushing for 299 yards as a backup
last season, Williams emerged as the starter this spring. He will be Will
Muschamp's first USC tailback. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending
on how you look at it.
