The university confirmed Monday the junior has been granted his release and will transfer from the program. The former Miami Booker T. Washington star’s exit ends a tumultuous UF career that at times showed flashes of promise. As a freshman, Harris played in relief of former UF quarterback Jeff Driskel, notably helping lead the team to a 10-9 win over Tennessee. He entered the 2015 season competing with redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier for the starting role, a battle that stretched into the opening weeks of his sophomore season. Despite eventually losing the role to Grier, the Gators turned to Harris following Grier’s yearlong suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. After starting the season 6-0, UF’s offense declined with Harris under center. Although he finished the season with 1,676 yards and nine touchdowns, Harris struggled with his accuracy, completing just 50 percent of his passes with nine interceptions as the Gators finished the season on a three-game losing streak. Coach Jim McElwain announced Harris and sophomore wide receiver Antonio Callaway would miss Spring practice due to unspecified reasons, although the two were enrolled in classes at UF. The university-related matter remains unresolved, McElwain said at SEC Media Days. With Luke Del Rio heading into the season as the presumptive starter, Harris would be making the switch to wide receiver. Harris will have two years of eligibility remaining if he transfers to a Division I program, but he will have to sit out in the Fall due to NCAA transfer rules.
