Ok, so how do you get reinstated after being charged with a felony? That’s what the charge was described as. I guess they paid for the damages, got suspended for a game, and promised never to bring a bb gun to campus again? He will undergo surgery once the swelling in his knee goes down. “From an injury standpoint, big loss that we're going to need some guys to step up,” McElwain said. “Obviously Dre Massey hurt his leg. He'll be out. He'll get that operated on here when the swelling goes down. He'll be out for the year. “There's obviously a disappointment any time something like that happens. And yet, the beautiful thing about teammates, family is they're there to support, elevate, pick him up. That's what we saw. He had a lot of family members here too for the first time. “I know it was disappointing for him, and yet, he's got a lot of ball in front of him. He'll get this thing handled. He's a guy that will work at the rehab piece and I think it has shown, credit our strength staff and our PTs (physical trainers) and stuff how some of our guys have come back from injuries and actually been stronger.” The Gators also could be without starting outside linebacker Daniel McMillian for a significant period of time. He severely sprained his ankle in the opener, but like Massey, continued to play. His status is uncertain for Saturday's game against Kentucky. “Here's the amazing thing about both of these guys: their want to play,” McElwain said. “Dre did it on the opening kickoff and played all the way through halftime on something that needs to be surgically repaired. That showed his toughness and his want to do what he can for this football team. “The same thing with D-Mac. A lot of guys would have said, 'You know what, I think I'm good.' And he wanted to play. I think that speaks for those two guys' character, their want, and I think a little bit about this football team. There's a certain hunger to want to play, and I think that's really good from that standpoint.” The news is better concerning another starter who was injured in the first half Saturday night and did not return. Safety Duke Dawson injured his shoulder, but it is not serious. He was cleared for limited contact in Monday's practice, McElwain said. Massey's injury will force the Gators to “reconfigure” some things at the wide receiver position. Only six scholarship receivers dressed for the opener, but that number will increase this Saturday even with the loss of Massey. C.J. Worton, who missed the opener with a sprained ankle, could be back at some point this week, and true freshmen Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells have been reinstated after being suspended from the opener for firing a BB gun on campus in July. “We look to get some guys back. C.J., I think, we'll see. Time will tell on that,” McElwain said. “Both freshmen receivers will be back in the mix this week. They obviously didn't get much practice time at all. Hopefully, the injuries they had (hamstrings), they'll be ready to go. I'll be able to tell you more on that Wednesday. “Reconfiguring some things at the wideout spot, getting some bodies back, that's going to be huge. Then we need to increase our explosive plays.” Quarterback Luke Del Rio said Cleveland and Wells could help compensate for the loss of Massey. "Tyrie and Rick are extremely athletic and fast,” Del Rio said. “Big guys for freshmen. If you just saw them in the locker room, you probably wouldn't think that they're true freshmen because they're pretty developed physically. “The biggest thing with them is just getting comfortable. They both had hamstrings, so just getting them comfortable and reintegrated back into the offense. It's really good to have them back, especially with Dre being down." UF will also have better numbers at tight end and cornerback with the return this week of C'yontai Lewis and Jalen Tabor. Lewis and Tabor were suspended for the UMass game for their practice-field fight during preseason camp. “Obviously, we're excited to have them back,” McElwain said. “They're great players and great people and care a lot about this team, care a lot about how they can affect the people around them. We need their energy. Both of them were leaders. I'm just excited for them to come back and play. “As in all cases, when you take something away from somebody that's really important, you hope maybe they learn from their actions. You've probably done that with people you know at some point. That's really what it's all about.
