Despite getting outshot by the No. 9 Gators, 16-7, No. 16 Auburn scored first and last and never trailed in winning the program's first third-round match just one year after reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time. “Well first, I'd just like to say congrats to Auburn,” UF coach Becky Burleigh said. “I'm excited to see the SEC be represented in the national stage at the next level. I thought that they were amazingly good defensively. We put a lot of pressure on them and they handled that really well. I definitely give credit to their team because that's not easy.” The Tigers (17-6), the region's No. 4 seed, got on the scoreboard first when senior Brooke Ramsier registered her eighth goal of the season, finding the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards out at the 25:31 mark of the first half to give Auburn a 1-0 lead. They were able to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 61:28 mark of the second half on a penalty kick by freshman Bri Folds, a native of Lakeland, after UF defender Rachelle Smith was issued a red card after taking her down inside the box. But the Gators (17-5-1), who would have to play the rest of the match a player down, scored a little more than a minute later when senior Brooke Sharp put a goal home from 6 yards out, with assists from Sarah Troccoli and Meggie Dougherty Howard, to cut the lead in half. Despite having several opportunities, however, No. 1 seed UF could not get the equalizer, and with just five minutes left to play, junior Kristen Dodson sealed the deal for Auburn with a blast from 30 yards out to make it 3-1. “It's a family here,” said a teary-eyed senior Savannah Jordan, who finished her UF career as the No. 2 all-time scorer with 81 goals. “There's not another group of girls that I would have rather taken the field with today. It's been quite a ride.” Fellow senior Dougherty Howard, also fighting back tears, echoed those sentiments. “I think all of us have grown so much as players and people, way more so than we even thought was possible,” she said. “So much of that is credited to the environment that is created here at UF.” Auburn moves on to its first Elite Eight appearance against No. 2 seed Southern California. “Congratulations to Florida,” said Tigers' coach Karen Hoppa. “They're a tremendous team and were the SEC Tournament champions.
