17. The Tweet of the Week goes to whoever sends out the tweets for Gators Football. After LSU had some weather problems Saturday, LSU Football sent out this tweet — “Because of lightning in the area, the spring game will not be resumed at Tiger Stadium.” To which Gators Football tweeted, “#SafetyFirst” with emojis of an alligator and a tiger. That is deliciously funny considering what happened last October.
If you haven’t seen this… I also saw a couple of LSU fans responding to the UF tweet saying Florida lacks class. There is no answer. That’s what I’ve figured out. There is no way to make spring games interesting AND coaches happy. And yet there were 381,494 fans who “attended” 11 SEC spring games (Tennessee released no attendance numbers, Vandy had no spring game and Arkansas is this weekend). I put quotes on attended because some of them were estimated crowds. We all wish those same people who estimate spring crowds could estimate our net worth. But I digress. Spring games are a necessary evil, but they are about as entertaining as watching someone clean out a dryer filter. I’ve always thought it would be better to play against another team, but coaches don’t want to show anything and worry about injury. So spring games will continue to be what they are — two hours of content for the SEC Network. And an excuse to tailgate. 11. I heard Colin Cowherd say the other day that he was rooting for Tim Tebow to fail at baseball because he didn’t want anybody to think baseball isn’t hard. I wonder if he rooted against Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham when they went from basketball to football. Tebow was hitting .218 going into Monday night’s game with two homers and nine RBI, but he had three hits Friday and two Sunday. Haters gonna hate, but why anyone would wish anything bad for Timmy is beyond me. 12. The smile on the face of Florida’s JJ Schwarz was fueled by pure joy after his grand slam Saturday led Florida to a big win over South Carolina. And he was brutally honest after the game talking about his own lack of confidence. We will see if that one swing of the bat can turn his season around, but we do know this — Florida needs Schwarz to be Schwarz if the Gators are going to make a deep run in the postseason. People saying he should sit down don’t understand how important he is to the team. By the way, Florida is seventh in the latest RPI, which means the Gators are back in the running for the all-important national seed with the soft part of the schedule ahead of them before they close the season against SEC East leader Kentucky. Buckle up. 13. So Ole Miss came into town as a ranked softball team and left without scoring a run in three games. It sets up a big weekend series in Knoxville against Tennessee. It’s Florida’s last SEC series and the Gators can clinch with two wins. Back in the old days, there used to be something we called the “Lisa Raymond Tanning Hour” because the women’s tennis star used to dispatch her opponents in an hour or less. That’s what it feels like when Kelly Barnhill pitches. This much I know — you need a dominant pitcher to win it all in Oklahoma City. 14. Sometimes you get on a roll and you just ride it and that’s exactly what the Florida women’s golf team did in Birmingham over the weekend. Emily Glaser, the women’s coach who has done a tremendous job, is another one of those typical Jeremy Foley hires — someone young and personable who is an assistant coach who has been around success. Glaser said she was sitting on the 17th tee Sunday with Maria Torres and Torres (who finished in fourth individually) asked, “How are we doing?” Glaser flashed a big smile and said, “We’re doing really well.” I’d say. Florida shot 22-under for the tournament, the best score in the event by six shots and won by 13. SEC championships are still a big deal around here so the ladies should enjoy the first one for UF in nine years. 15. And with that, Florida is in great position to win yet another SEC All-Sports Award presented by GateHouse. UF has a commanding lead in the overall, as well as the men’s and women’s with three sports still to be decided (baseball, softball and track and field). I like UF’s chances. Texas A&M is in second in all three categories. 16. I am so old that I remember when I used to sit in front of a TV at work and watch the NFL draft in the middle of a weekday afternoon. Then, it wasn’t this long and drawn out ordeal. And then we’d try to get in touch with drafted players using something called a “landline” phone and bang out a story on something called a “typewriter.” It is amazing how many knuckleheads there are who put their futures in jeopardy because they can’t put down the pipe for a couple of months. I’m not naming names. 18. It began Sunday, my new workout plan. It does not include 25-ounce beers or chicken wings or passing on the gym because it’s too far.
