Florida (35-13) moved ahead of Kentucky into sole possession of first place in the SEC East after the Wildcats lost 6-3 to Georgia earlier Sunday afternoon. Florida and Mississippi State are both tied in league play at 16-8 heading into the final two series of the season. The Gators were an even 6-6 in league play April 8 after losing two of three games in a home series to Tennessee. Since, the Gators have won four straight series in conference play with a 10-2 record. “Even before the season started, I thought we had a really good club,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “We just didn’t play well for three or four weeks, didn’t swing the bats very well. But I always had trust in our players.” Third baseman Jonathan India and left fielder Ryan Larson belted solo home runs to help power the offense Sunday. Sophomore righty Jackson Kowar (8-0) allowed two earned runs in 6.2 innings to earn the win, and sophomore righty Michael Byrne got the final five outs to tie a UF program record with his 13th save of the season. Byrne joins Shaun Anderson (2015), Josh Fogg (1998) and Danny Wheeler (1994) as players who have recorded 13 saves for UF in one season. “It’s a pretty cool accomplishment, joining Shaun and Danny Wheeler and another guy (Fogg),” Byrne said. Junior center fielder Nick Horvath, a ninth-inning defensive replacement, made a nice running catch in right-center to help preserve the lead. “I’m not sure we have many other people on our team that would make that play,” O’Sullivan said. Florida jumped on Ole Miss starter David Parkinson early. India, back in the lineup this weekend after sitting out more than a month with an arm injury, lined an opposite field home run over the right field wall in the second inning to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. “I haven’t done that in a while so that felt good for me, getting back on track,” India said. Ole Miss (29-20,11-13) came back to tie the score in the top of the third on an RBI double by Nick Fortes. But the Gators answered with two runs in the fourth. Freshman Austin Langworthy led off the inning with a walk, then moved to third on a throwing error on a pickoff play by Parkinson. Nelson Maldonado drove in Langworthy with an RBI single to put the Gators up 2-1. Maldonado moved to third base on a hit-and-run single by Christian Hicks, then came home on a sacrifice fly by Mark Kolozsvary, putting the Gators up 3-1. Florida scored three more times in the fifth to break the game open. Larson led off the inning with a towering home run over the left field bleachers to put Florida up 4-1. JJ Schwarz, who went 2 for 4, singled with two outs, moved to second on a Maldonado walk and raced all the way home from second on a wild pitch from Ole Miss relief pitcher Greer Holston. Hicks then extended UF’s lead to 6-1 with an RBI double. “We swung the bats really well against the best staff, top to bottom, statistically in the league,” O’Sullivan said. “In the three games we scored 24 runs.
