Posted online: Saturday, December 11, 2004 at 0019 hours IST KOCHI, DECEMBER 10: It was probably the most difficult decision that 40-year-old Venu, an autorickshaw driver in Aroor near here, had to take in his life. And by doing so, he not only thumbed his nose at conservative Kerala but also prevented his wife from adding to the lesbian suicide statistics in the state. Venu ended up with two wives, who had been involved in a relationship with each other. The father of two, who had been married to 26-year-old Mangala for about 10 years now, had to tie the knot with a 23-year-old woman, Ramlath, in the Guruvayoor temple last week. Mangala, allegedly involved in a relationship with Ramlath for about 10 years, threatened to commit suicide if she could not have the latter, who was unmarried, to live with them in their house, sources said. Mangala and Ramlath work for a local financier, and according to police, the latter was a regular visitor at Mangala's home for many years. ''Mangala wanted to keep both Venu and Ramlath, and Venu agreed to bring Ramlath in as a wife,'' the police said. Soon after the marriage, Ramlath's family lodged a complaint saying she was missing. Venu later left Aroor with his wives and children for an unknown place. With its strait-jacketed conservatism, records say at least 21 lesbians had killed themselves in the state during the six years from 1995 to 2001, unable to cope with the social stigma. Recently, two ''self-confessed lesbians'', Unnimaya (23) and Sheela (21), ran away from their village near Thiruvananthapuram to Wayanad, where they took up odd jobs for a living. They lived there under changed identities till a local magazine wrote about them and blew their cover.
