Mumbai:

Roshni Patel (25), a doctor, was married for six months, but her husband
Sameer could not satisfy her physical needs. She convinced him to get
medically examined for impotency, but when even that did not work, she
decided to end the marriage.

To make matters worse, Sameer fled the country. "Finally, their relatives
settled the matter and the duo filed for divorce by mutual consent in June
2008," said Swati Gala, who was the advocate for Roshni.

Experts associated with family courts believe that divorce cases on the
grounds of impotency are on a rise due to lack of medical awareness. "People
who genuinely suffer from impotency settle the issue out of court," said
Advocate Nelopher Akhter, president of Bar Association of Family Court.

In another case, Nalini Verma too left her husband's home because he was not
able to perform sex. Ashok denied being impotent and said he was not able to
have sex, as Nalini had body odour which irritated him.

"It was not the case of impotency, it was relative impotency. But due to
ignorance, they ended up breaking their marriage," said Gala, advocate for
both the parties.
