Okay, the deal with Earthlink DSL is that they use PPPoE, chap
authentication, your email address as the user name and your email password
as the auth password.

For the record and for others, here's what I did to get it working.

Received the DSL modem today (it's an Arescom NetDSL 800 model that I got.)

Copied the configuration of my Gnatbox 3.1.1 machine to my laptop.
Opened the new GBAdmin 3.2.1.
Merged the configuration from the .flp file.
Saved it as the gb321-ppp.flp file
Created the PPP floppy.

Went downstairs to the network 'closet' (har har) and pulled the old
floppy out, stuck the new one in.
Rebooted. Accessed the network via PPP and the old ISP to make sure stuff
was still working.
Shut down. Added the NIC card for the DSL line. (Earthlink's modem
comes with its Ethernet cable already.)
Rebooted. Verified that the new NIC found an address and then accessed the
network via PPP and the old ISP to make sure stuff was still working.
Fired up the DSL modem. Waited for the link light on the WAN to come on
steady. (Took about 1 minute.)
Changed the external interface to 'ep2' and the interface to
DHCP. Modified the DNS to Earthlink's.
Rebooted (probably not necessary.)
Tried an external address. No good.
Got on the phone with tech support. I just selected the Windows support
option.
When the support guy got on, I told him I lied. He laughed, said they
used to have a walkthrough for Roaring Penguin Linux but he couldn't even
find that any more. I asked did they use DHCP or PPPoE -- he confirmed
that it was PPPoE. I asked him whether it was chap or pap authentication,
he said chap -- and then I asked what my user name and password were and he
verified it was my email addy and password.

So here I am, cruising along at 1.5MBPS. Oh, my, I'm in love. I doubt
I'm going to bed tonight.

BTW, all defaults are set on this Gnatbox and one additional filter -- deny
traffic to port 1214 (KaZaa.) There's nothing quite like one's daughter
running KaZaa on a 33.6 modem when you're trying to do a file download.

Hope this helps other poor schmucks who are trying to get up on DSL.
