The reason I suggested running the system off of a CD was not really to
allow for more space, although that was a side benefit. I was more
interested in the security aspects of having my configuration stored on a
read-only media. In my situation I use GB internally at several remote sites
that all have the same configuration for ease of management so its not
necessary that I make many changes to the system but that would not work for
all (as we can gather from the posts). For storage there are other solutions
obviously such as flash memory and solid state hard drives, or net boot for
that matter (I don't feel comfortable with the security aspects of that last
one) these I tend to consider more exotic solutions and items that defeat
one of the major reasons that I was attracted to GB, which is its simplicity
of design and operation. I would prefer to see the option to choose your
boot media rather than be strapped to one solution, but above all I would
not like to see the software only version go away as features were added and
the OS become to large for a single floppy.

I think is is a great product. However, I don't feel it is the answer to
this message thread. As I was evaluating GNAT Box for purchase I seen the
press announcement about the GB-100. Going through my local vendor I could
get no more information about the GB-100 than what was in the press release.
Nothing about availability, new features, or most importantly, functions
that it would support that the software only version wouldn't. I asked if I
should wait for it to be released. They assure me that the func
tionality would be the same and I would not loose anything by purchasing the
software only version. This may have just been a pitch to get the quick
sale. That being said, your statement here makes me wonder if I don't have a
dead-end product that will either: 1) Force me to upgrade to the hardware
version to get full functionality. 2) Live with the limitations of a single
floppy based software solution. 3) Scrap GNAT Box for another product.

Of all the media suggestions I have read here I like the dual floppy (main
functionality and configuration on disk one with optional modules on a
second) approach best. The OS on a CD with configuration on a floppy is also
interesting. This would allow you to provide all options on the floppy and
require an authorization code (stored on the floppy) to activate the
feature.

I have another suggestion. Obviously everyone using this product has a
network. Why not load the optional modules from a network server on the
protected network?
