A bit off-topic but....

I'm after some info on Syslog.  Namely, the numbers that proceed each message that look like:

<142> Message Text

The number represents the "output" (Local1 etc) and the priority of the message.

Is there a standard that Syslog follows?  or is this just a Unix thing?
If there is some sort of standard, could anyone fill me in?  or point me to an RFC that lays it out?

Thanks.
