Quite on the contrary, at the time they were much more reliable, faster and more compact than current tape solutions. The technology just evolved out of necessity (on to 5.25, high-density, 3.5, etc) . Before anyone realized it, there was far too much media using this antiquated technology, making it extremely difficult to move to new standards. This doesn't mean it's robust, it means it couldn't be put out of it's misery. :)
Floppies aren't reliable. I'm saying this as someone who has lost multiple Gnatbox configurations to brand new disks wearing out over time.
