Were you able to get the new RAM to be verified by the system program? Almost all Compaq systems had a BIOS that was designed to be written by a program that was installed into a Compaq specific (type 12 I think) partition on the hard drive. Whenever changes were made to the system, the diagnostic tool had to be run so that the BIOS could be updated. If you have done this, make sure the little switch inside the case on the mother board has been switched to allow changes to the BIOS. The factory default is not to allow this. I think there is another jumper or switch to kill the existing settings in the BIOS and force the computer to reprogram it. You should still be able to download all of these programs from Compaq's site if you haven't already.
