I think perhaps you are looking at some old documentation. The IPSec VPN uses the full bit strength of all the encryption algorithms. The GNAT Box system software has export authorization for this strong encryption so users outside the USA are not limited to weaker versions of the encryption algorithms.
The GNAT Box system supports all the IPSec encryption (unlike many other vendor's VPN). These include: DES, 3DES, Blowfish, Twofish, AES and CAST128. If you are using an IPSec VPN between GNAT Box systems I suggest that you use one of the modern algorithms like AES or Blowfish as they are much more efficient than DES or 3DES.
