Had a look at the mailserver logs and a message was sent aprox 2 mins before and was delivered successfully. No sign of errors. As the logs appear to show no problems I think I will just bury my head in the sand for a while and see if it is a one off.

The SMTP server on the outside has tried to send some information to a socket (12961) it thought was still open, but the GB has closed it either through a timeout or at the request of your internal SMTP server.
