Any recommendations on readily available NICs?
First, I suggest going PCI instead of ISA. You can get good 10/100 PCI NICs dirt cheap nowadays, and it'll save you the hassle of configuring the cards. You also won't have to worry about keeping track of the config disk in case one of the cards somehow looses it's settings. If you're building the new GNAT Box out of old hardware, make sure it's a P-90 or better. Some of the older systems have problems with PCI. I've built a lot (around a dozen) of GNAT Boxes around the SMC EtherPower (9432) and EtherEZ cards, and none of the boxes have ever had any problem that could be attributable to problems with the NIC. As far as performance goes, the hottest connections I've had available for testing are a cable modem and a partial T1 (384K). In both cases, I have been able to saturate the bandwidth while the GNAT Box was still reporting less than 25% CPU usage (on a P90 with 64M of RAM).
