I have tested SurfControl which is a Windows product that sits on a dedicated box and works by promiscuously sniffing the network and works with WinNT/2K User Accounts.
It has two version the full DB based product and a Log only version which I think is called Scout. BTW, SurfControl owns CyberNOT as well. -----Original Message----- From: Mike Burden [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 2:09 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [gb-users] Internet access filtering (tangentially GNAT Box related) We (and probably a few other people on this list!) are looking for software to control outbound access to the Internet. The features we are looking for are: 1. Must be able to control access based on user (rather than by IP) Controlling access by IP address is not acceptable -- it's too much hassle to maintain as users move about in the office. I'm looking for a system where I can put users into groups and then assign access rights to the groups. Ideally, I'd like the system to work by using the NT/2000 Domain userid of the person attempting to access the Internet, but a system where the user logs in for Internet access would also be acceptable. 2. Must allow the administrator to maintain a Whitelist. Most of the users are going to be denied access to all but a small handful of websites. We need the ability to say that a user has no access except to sites on the Whitelist. 3. It would be acceptable for the software either to work with GNAT Box (ala CyberNOT) or to act as a proxy server (in which case we can simply create outbound filters to allow connections from the proxy and deny connections from anywhere else). After talking to GTA, we've decided that CyberNOT will not meet our needs, as it is essential that we be able to control access by user rather than by IP address. I'm hoping that someone here has used another product that may be closer to meeting our needs.
