With some inspiration from DavidR and GTA Techsupport I eventually tracked down the problem ...
I changed the SMTP proxy config to use the IP of my actual mail server as the primary mailserver and everything came alive again. Reconstructing things, it seems like I must have saved a configuration to my hard drive which I had not saved to the gnatbox. Usually, I start by loading from the gnatbox and make a backup to the harddrive but since my last fiddles had been last week I believed I could assume that the two were in sync. I had previously altered the configuration so that the DNS service was enabled for forwarding and changed the basic config DNS to point to the box. I also disabled the internal DNS because it would have forwarded out a different port. But apparently the internal DNS disable was never saved to the gnatbox. So today when I added a new domain, I started with the harddrive configuration and inadvertantly added the internal dns disable to the new configuration. Since the EMAIL proxy was configured with a host name which happened to resolve to a PRO net email server on the internal dns and to the EXT net email proxy on the external DNS, suddenly the SMTP server was looping on itself since the internal DNS wasn't defined.
