Just download the configuration from the web interface. If the CF dies you need only reload a cf with the reload floppies then re-upload the configuration. You could also do the backup direct to floppy from the console.
If you insist on making an image, pop the CF card in a CF reader and use a product like WinImage to make an image file of it which you can restore to another card. Honestly though, in 3 years of supporting handheld computers that use CF for internal storage I've seen maybe 2 go bad. Definitely not as bad as those terrible DOMs they were forcing on us for a while.
