Have you tried resetting the security, privacy and advanced features to the default settings (one group at a time)?
That resolved it when I had similar experience. I thought it might be something in internet explorer so I cleared out all the cookies, temporary files, cache, etc. but I still cant connect. I also backed off from IE6 to IE5.
