If your VPN is a dynamic VPN, then it can only be
initiated from the client end (for the obvious
reason that the client knows the server's address,
but the server doesn't know the client's address).

Having something behind the client GNAT Box ping
something behind the server GNAT Box (or anything
else that causes a machine behind the client to
generate traffic to a machine behind the server)
is the only way that you can keep the VPN active
continuously.

I use a freeware program called "TrayPing" on my
home PC to ping a PC in the office once a minute.

There are also a number of other freeware and
shareware programs available that do pretty much
the same things that TrayPing does.

If you have a UNIX-type machine behind the client
GNAT Box, this would be trivially easy to set up.
