Is there any way besides using the auth client to have users inside the network authenticated before accessing the internet?
This may not be the answer you're looking for but we use a dedicated proxy server to authenticate all HTTP(S) and FTP access. We use MIMESweeper for Web that can authenticate against a Windows (NT / AD) directory, LDAP or IP list. WebMarshal (from NetIQ) is another Windows based authenticating proxy. Microsoft has its ISA product.
