Since this is also new hardware for me, I'll try a couple of other things to try and isolate. Note that gcc-4_2-branch is working perfectly for me, so I have switched over to that for work as a temporary measure so I can get things done. This makes me think that it's not a distro-specific issue, or a hardware specific issue, or a binutils specific issue, but most likely a gcc-specific issue.
