Compile with: gcc -Wall -S z3.cc This program does give a warning about a1 defined-but-not-used. I believe this is incorrect. The real point is that z2.cc and z3.cc should behave consistently. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=33515
