Changing the configure command to

nohup ../../unZipped/gcc-4.4-20081107/configure
--prefix=/home/kkusuman/software/myroot/gcc-4.4-20081107 --with-gnu-as
--with-gnu-ld 2>&1 > configure.log &

fixed the problem.
