How would I find out if that is the issue? The numbers reported by my strace output seem harmless to me (but then I'm no expert with that tool). I'm going to try and compile a debug version of gcc-4.4.3. Will make STAGE2_CFLAGS="-g -O0" STAGE3_CFLAGS="-g -O0" all make install produce the result I'm looking for? -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=43818
