Note, since you don't have a Copyright Assignment on file, it will be difficult to fully acknowledge your work in the ChangeLog. Thus, I would suggest having first a minimal patch, limited to char, limited in any way ;) but still sufficient to bring most of the improvement we are aiming to within the ABI.
