Second, I don't see the mov.w issue you raised. I get a 32bit move. I note that you're compiling with -mshort. It's never been thoroughly tested to the best of my knowledge (and I've been working on gcc for, egad, 30 years now). Use it at your own risk. Finally, if you're looking for good code, -O2 is generally going to be your best option.
