We had issues like that on HPPA and we ended up removing the warning, but I've also never seen anyone report that on alpha/hppa before confusing configure tests (though it makes sense). May be a distro patch or something affecting it? Anyway, the hang isn't what's important, it's the fact that the driver is actually doing the wrong thing. strace isn't important there, you need to look with gdb as to why it's even doing it.
