If you are so inclined, feel free to post a gdb backtrace for one of the assertions. Perhaps the old stare-at-the-code trick will expose something. The fact that occurs on Solaris/amd64 contradicts my endian instinct. Since we test on x86_64 all the time, but on Ubuntu, perhaps we're tripping on Solaris standard library behavior.
