Ya, it's an ABI-breaking change but it's going to burn people on performance so
we should figure out something to do about it. At a bare minimum we should go
around to the distros and try to convince them to pass the configure-time flag
for AMOs so they don't need a flag day in the future.
The only other thing I could think of would be adding some third mode that
somehow keeps ABI compatibility but allows for AMO use -- maybe packing extra
data in there so the size doesn't change? I think we talked about that when
the bug came up and we decided we'd punt on it.
