--- Comment #2 from Jeffrey A. Law <law at gcc dot gnu.org> --- I'm not sure that's necessarily wise. One of things I was looking at with Austin a month or so ago was a whole slew of missed bitfield optimizations because we *don't* use BIT_FIELD_REF enough in gimple.
