As described in bug 119987 (marked as dup) I strongly believe this should be
promoted to being included in -std=gnu* because this is an incredibly useful
extension when it comes to maintaining ABI compatibility.

This is also an extension that really ought to be submitted to the C/C++
standards committees for standardization, especially with there being multiple
implementations.

It is really an extremely natural extension to anonymous structs and unions.

It would also be *insanely* useful to be able to use these in system headers
under __extension__, which currently does not seem to be possible.
