I seriously considered that.  Essentially, letting the optimizer concern 
itself merely with asking for the improved domwalk and clearing 
EDGE_EXECUTABLE when the optimizer finds a conditional it can collapse. 
 Bury the rest entirely within domwalk.c.

It shouldn't be hard to prototype on top of the refactoring I've already 
done.
