looks like a GTY kinda issue from the pattern showing in the gdb
output/
two more data points -
1) doesn't fail on either powerpc-darwin9 or x86-64-darwin10.
2) doesn't fail if compiled "-save-temps"
.. makes one think that it's sensitive to the headers used
