Hmm, the function already has a "protect" parameter that overlaps
somewhat with the functionality we're looking for. But it isn't a
perfect fit, and I'm not going to ask you to rewrite that code to
remove the duplication. OK.
Indeed, after I sent the patch I noticed something, but in fact the
rework didn't seem trivial to me. I promise to have a look when the time
allows.
