Somewhat unrelated but a while ago I had the idea of doing the load-store discovery in a more bottom-up way, i.e. starting with just the address, a step, etc. "allowing everything" by default and then knock out each approach one by one, in order to limit the cross pollination of approaches we currently have. But, obviously, that's no silver bullet either, and the closer I got to a proper solution, the more it looked like what we currently have ;)
