Pings shouldn't be an unthreaded duplicate copy of the patch, because this can cause confusion about which thread to reply to. I think the best practice is normally to reply to your original email with the ping included in the subject line.
I've also seen people ping a group of patches by linking to the original emails in an archive, which keeps the distinction clear but has the disadvantage of not bringing the original email thread to the top of the inbox (assuming a threaded view).
