Mark:I cannot build and use (link, etc.) 64-bit shared libraries on powerpc-apple-darwin8.1.0 with gcc version 4.0.1 20050615 (prerelease). This is a regression from 4.0.0 on the same platform.
I couldn't come up with a short example, sorry, but it is easy to reproduce if you have the right hardware/software combo (G5 with Xcode 2.1 on MacOS X 10.4.1).
