To confirm this theory - yes, make completed with most targets when
built from a different directory than the source directory. I should
have read the latest install instructions carefully.

Unfortunately, due my unfamiliarity with GCC (or my incompetence? :-) ),
I don't know how to re-generate libgcc/configure from the alterred
libgcc/configure.ac. I checked the install instructions and couldn't
find a reference to this. I tried both autoconf and automake. Neither
did the 'right' thing. :-)
