Hum, this reminds me very much of the very recent thread : http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/gdal-dev/2013-October/037257.html . So there might indeed be an issue with HDF5 1.8.11, and not specifically related to Windows. I didn't try myself. Did you try with an older Windows build provided by the HDF_Group ?
