hehe.  but sda might be the system disk that is dying - high sector, but maybe
dual boot.  And if gdal binaries are not yet affected (QGIS already doesn't
start anymore), I figure the probability that it will happen soon is raising
with every access.

Not sure if it's a must to work correctly under such circumstances, but if so
[1] could be used to test.
