Howard Butler, Dan Baston, Alessandro Pasotti, Michael Smith, Chris Toney, Seth Girvin, Michael Sumner, Even Rouault, Javier Jimenez Shaw, and special guest Galen Scott from NOAA held the monthly GDAL Maintainers Meeting on 01/22/2026. The following items were discussed and reported upon:
# Project News * Thanks to Dan Baston's efforts, results and analysis from the [2025 GDAL User Survey](https://gdal.org/en/stable/community/user_survey_2025.html) are now available. * Support GDAL with a new t-shirt! Javier Jimenez, Even Rouault, and Galen Scott discussed a number of topics: * Nothing will be published in EPSG until the NSRS is officially released. It is expected that the ratification of the NSRS will happen in FGDC in the first half of 2027. * PROJ will not have support for the NSRS in released software until its artifacts are registered and published to EPSG and a subsequent PROJ version is released. * Javier has created an auxiliary database that includes NSRS artifacts and support for testing and evaluation at https://github.com/jjimenezshaw/NSRS-2022-PROJ Users can utilize this resource for testing the NSRS within their own applications. # Maintenance activities update ## Alessandro * PR review activity * `gdal raster blend` – multiply, screen, overlay, hard, lighten, darken, color burn, and color dodge, with the possibility of easily adding more. See https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/pull/13688 for details ## Dan * PR reviews * Attempted to get SWIG argument names properly described in Python bindings, but he backed away due to worrying about the number of subsequent test changes its implementation was causing. Such an implementation is likely to cause silent bugs for user-land code :( * Updated `gdal vector sort` with an out-of-core implementation * 2025 GDAL User Survey results summary ## Even * 40+ PRs and tickets * `gdal vector partition` now supports extra metadata for GeoParquet output * Transitioned `/vsiunix` away from `FILE*`-based implementation and added our own buffering approache * Tons of externally-supported Zarr work ## Javier * Pointed to working example using `projinfo` as a library function with a callback for WASM and browser execution. See https://jjimenezshaw.github.io/wasm-proj/projinfo.html to test. See https://jjimenezshaw.github.io/wasm-proj/example.html to use PROJ in a browser for transformation testing. # Next Meeting The next GDAL Maintainers Meeting is 02/26/2026 at 13:00 UTC.
