The point was that he doesn't need to rename with a SCM/VCS.
If I understood the OP correct, goal was to just simple rename a file.
E.g. from foo.c to baa.c. This cannot be solved by using a VCS. Of
course, foo.rc2.c to foo.final.c is a case for a VCS - I recommend
geanyVC for this task as backend. ;)

And he renames "to keep a successive record.", which is IIUC to archive
successful code before doing dangerous stuff.
