Writing a visual beep will be easy, and from a few other programs I

gtk_widget_set_state(statusbar, GTK_STATE_SELECTED)
g_timeout_add(user preference, unbeep)
(an event box may be required if gtk status bar does not support
SELECTED state)
So long as it has a preference to turn it firmly O-F-F
We're going to break some sort of record for the maximum number of
preferences ever used in a single program :)
